I don’t know why, but I have a thing for sleeper hits! Always have. I’m typically drawn to the stuff that’s somewhat obscure, a bit of the underdog. The stuff that’s overlooked and/or gets little to no airplay. You know, the songs that get buried under the success of their siblings on the charts.
Well, in true fashion, today’s song of the day is one that fit that bill. I was reunited with this one last night actually. Upon hearing the intro, I didn’t recognize it right off. But ohhhh once it started to play, I cracked a smile and turned it up! After hearing it once, I needed to HEAR it again! Had to HEAR it again!! Instantly my mind travelled to the era when this song was created. 1985. That was quite a year musically. New Edition, The Gap Band, Tina, Ashford & Simpson, Luther, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Freddie and Whitney all had number one R&B albums that year. And so did Stevie! What a gem he shared with the world when he released In Square Circle! Its sound certainly represents the 80s. Tons of synthesizers and pop appeal! Luther Vandross, Phillip Bailey and Deniece Williams each contributed to success of this album. In Square Circle boasted two tunes in particular that have become part of Stevie’s standard set list: Part-Time Lover and Overjoyed. Neither of those are my choice today. But you wanna know what is? Today’s SOTD is Stevie Wonder’s “I Love You Too Much”! It totally makes me smile. Makes me feel like a sunny summery Saturday on this cold autumn day!
Take a listen and ENJOY!!!!!!!!!
Until Next Time,
