Unintentionally, but most pleasantly…today shaped up to be our day of the PIANO! We started out the journey with Hazel Scott and Ahmad Jamal, later venturing on to the sounds of Thelonius Monk, Robert Glasper and finally…Mulgrew Miller. What a delight it has been to listen to the variances in playing styles–but yet still be held captive by each of these key tickling giants!
Speaking of Mulgrew Miller. Today also happens to be his birthday! He would have been 59. As we look at his life and discography, it’s safe to say that Mulgrew was a musician’s musician. He was and still is quite respected throughout the world for his often unsung talent.
Mulgrew once said, “I worked hard to maintain a certain mental and emotional equilibrium. It’s mostly due to my faith in the Creator. I don’t put all my eggs in that basket of being a rich and famous jazz guy. That allows me a certain amount of freedom, because I don’t have to play music for money. I play music because I love it.”
Until Next Time…Remembering Mulgrew!
