This marks the first installment of my Headphones to Head-nods series, where I will share thoughts about my recent musical explorations and discoveries. For your convenience, I’ve even set up a helpful Headphone scale:
If I LOVE it = Two Headphones…Let the head-nods begin!
If I LIKE it= One Headphone…With the occasional head-nod.
If I Have NO COMMENT= Headphones Off…shutting down the iPod. Lots of head-nodding, but from left to right NOT up and down!
See? Super-simple!
Now let’s put this to the test with my preview of Kindred the Family Soul’s Love Has No Recession.
Is it me or do Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon (the married duo that form Kindred the Family Soul) remind you of some of your kinfolk? Don’t they seem like the couple next door or someone you’d want to be cool with. They don’t put on airs; and they just strike me as regular folk. I think many of us feel like we share kindred spirits with the couple. Their music produces a sound and that I wish we heard more often. They are doing their part to fill the void left by much of what we HEAR today. They’re like our modern-day Ashford and Simpson!
For the past couple of days, I’ve been listening to Kindred’s latest offering, Love Has No Recession, and I’m elated to say it gets a green light from me! I’d been reserving my comments until I’d listened to it, in its entirety at least thrice. And like the It’s a feel good kinda cd. It’s relatable. This fourth full-length cd is full of songs with lyrics that are all understandable and more importantly REPEATABLE. Listeners Beware: this material is for the mature, more sophisticated R&B lover. It’s chock-full of slow-draggable material. Not only Love Has No Recession provides the perfect backdrop for a little wine- or cognac-sippin’ but also gives you something that’s conducive for a light two-step.
Although I can listen to all 16 tracks from start to finish…repeatedly, some of my personal favorites include:
- Sticking With You
- Love Has No Recession
- We all will Know (feat. Raheem DeVaughn)
- Take A Look Around (feat. BJ The Chicago Kid and Bilal)
and this one entitled “Magic Happen”

Suffice it to say…Love Has No Recession brings a smile to my face. Please support Kindred the Family Soul by PURCHASING this cd next Tuesday (7/26)! You won’t be disappointed.
“And the survey says…” this album gets–2 HEADPHONES!
Until Next Time…Happy Listening,
-TL
