Keepin’ Up With KiKi Sheard!

By T.L. Brown · On December 10, 2013

Hailing from Gospel royalty, Kierra “KiKi” Sheard is taking giant steps as she’s growing and working to advance the kingdom of God. From family, to ministry, to school and creating a successful music career, KiKi is balancing it all with God’s grace. HWIH recently spoke with the 23-year old, Detroit native to learn how she manages her busy but blessed life:

HWIH: Growing up in an extraordinarily gifted family like yours, you were introduced to Christ at an early age; but how old were you when you developed a relationship of your own with God?

KS: My walk with Him really started developing from the ages of 16-18. That was the timeframe where I wasn’t just going to church, but I was also starting to take notes on what the pastor was teaching and actually learning to apply it to my daily life.

HWIH: What made your choose to include some live recordings on your latest project, “Free?”

KS: I’ve wanted to do a live recording for quite some time. I feel like it was an opportunity to show my true self, my growth and my maturity both spiritually and naturally. I wanted my young listeners and even the older ones too, to see that I’m serious about ministry and I think that shines through especially in a live setting.

HWIH: How have you grown musically with this project?

KS: God is showing me where I’m supposed to be musically. “Free” has challenged me to move beyond my comfort zone. During the live recording/performance I’m working with my community choir and we’re doing lots of movement and dancing on stage. I feel the listeners will experience a freedom to worship with this project. I’m discovering my niche and working to develop a new sound for myself as I’ve been doing more writing. I’ve asked God to teach me to write music that is relatable to not just me, but to others as well.

HWIH: Tell us about some of the other projects you’re working on.

KS: I’ve been devoting a lot of time to my non-profit organization, Bold! Right! Life! (BRL). God gave me a vision to start BRL and it’s designed to help young adults stay on the right path. We help them identify and nurture their goals, talents, and gifts. BRL provides them with right guidance, support and resources to show them that they don’t have to compromise who they are to live boldly for Christ.

HWIH: Do you consider yourself a role model?

KS: I hope that I am or can be a role model for others. I try to be as transparent as I possibly can. My struggles may not be like someone else’s but I do have them. I believe that being a Christian and a righteous liver takes sanctification and that’s a continuous process, but I hope that I can be an influential figure to someone even though I am not perfect.
