I remember the day like it was yesterday, September 23, 2013. That’s the day I caught my first glimpse of the long-awaited video release from Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner project which featured an incredible, undeniable remake of Lalah Hathaway’s “Something.”
Now if we take a journey back in time…you’d quickly learn that I first fell in love with “Something” back in 1990, as it was the premier cut on Lalah’s self-entitled debut. And suffice it to say, I’ve been mesmerized by Lalah’s talent ever since. 24 years ago…nearly a quarter century!!! Wow! Real music will always stand the test of time.
Ok, back to future…uhh, I mean the present. Actually the past-present! So as I began watching the video, I knew I was in for a TREAT. Lalah’s fresh approach to the vocals and of course her chord singing. Impeccable. Snarky Puppy’s rearranged instrumentation. Genius. This was a match made in heaven. I quickly shared the video with anyone and everyone who would listen! I had a hunch that the Snarkies and Lalah had stumbled across greatness.
Apparently I wasn’t the only one that shared that hunch. The powers that be over at the Grammys apparently felt the same way! And on Sunday, January 26, 2014 Snarky Puppy and Lalah Hathaway earned their very first Grammy Awards for this masterpiece!
In the off chance that you’ve not seen the video, take a gander. If you have seen it, do enjoy it again and again!!
Until Next Time,
-TL
