Alright y’all. I have a confession to make. Being the true music enthusiast that I am…I’m ashamed to admit this, but we’re all family in this music thing, right? Right. Ok, so here goes. As much as I love music…there are 2 things that I struggle with. Remembering all the lyrics and believe it or not…recalling exact SONG TITLES. Wow. There. I said it.
I don’t know what it is or why this proves to be difficult for me. It just is. And sadly it’s gotten worse over the years, as the practice of purchasing hardcopy CDs nears extinction. Do any of you suffer with this too? (You know misery loves company!)
On numerous occasions, especially when folks ride in the car with me, I’ve been asked the question, “What’s the name of that song?” Instantly, in a moment of terror, I begin to silently scream and rack my brain in search of what I know is not there. And my reply usually is something like, “I don’t know the exact name of this one, but it is “Track 8” on “so and so’s” second CD.” Sad, I know. But at least I can point the listener in the right direction for finding it for themselves. That’s gotta count for something, right?
So, now that I’ve admitted and isolated this as a problem, I’ve come up with a solution! (You know I cannot and will not continue to wallow in this! Too embarrassing!) As hard as it is, especially in this society of convenience that we live in, I’ve committed to changing the way I buy music going forward. I’ve put myself on restriction from online purchasing and downloads. Instead, I’ve decided…until further notice… that I must make all future music purchases at the store. (I’m getting the jitters and shakes just thinkin about it, but this must be done.)
Furthermore…my purchases won’t be made at just any store, or mass merchandiser. My music allowance (yes, I’ve had to create a “kitty” to support my music “habit”) and purchases must be made at my local record/cd shop. The “mom and pop” small business owners need our patronage to survive. The way I see it, this creates a win-win for all parties involved. Let me show you how:
- The artist will get their full credit and royalties.(Support our artists! Especially the INDIES!)
- The record shop owner is moving product off their shelves…increasing sales and volume!
- My musical circle of influence will continue to expand, as I develop a rapport with the owner (s) and other regulars that frequent the record shop. (In time, I’ll surely learn of new artists to add to my repertoire!)
- I’ll have a physical copy of the cd to add to my collection that’s complete with liner notes and a full list of SONG TITLES!!!!!!!!
- I’m sure there are other advantages that I haven’t listed, but you get the gist!
See…this solution works for everyone!
Whew! So…now you know. The word is out. I’ve shown you one of my musical weaknesses. Yes, there are others, but those will be revealed in due time. I know I am not alone in this. And the good thing is, I’m working on it. But for those of you who are suffering with something similar…either you’re gonna get with THIS (commit to reading liner notes and do a better job of remembering SONG TITLES) or THAT (continue calling a song by its track number. Shameful! ) THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!!!! [go ahead, cue the music: “Who’s the blacksheep, what’s the blacksheep! What did I tell you in the last post about my song for every occasion/situation?]
Gotta run. It’s Saturday and I need to make my way to 1131 Euclid Avenue…better known as Moods Music!
Until Next Time…
